Next generation of Omani sailors excel during Oman Sailing Championship 2022

Approximately 75 sailors from the Al Mouj Muscat, Marina Bandar Al Rowdha, Mussanah and Sur Sailing Schools competed across six classes to win the trophy and a place in the Oman National Team for international events.

Muscat: Sailors from all for of Oman Sail’s Sailing Schools took to the water in Sur to compete for the national title at the Oman Sailing Championship 2022. 

Approximately 75 sailors from the Al Mouj Muscat, Marina Bandar Al Rowdha, Mussanah and Sur Sailing Schools competed across six classes to win the trophy and a place in the Oman National Team for international events.

Sailors in the debuting Diam24 and RS Venture Class, composed of athletes from Oman Sail’s Para Sailing programme ‘SailFree’, joined Optimist, ILCA 4, ILCA 6, and iQFOiL classes for four days of racing. The winners received their trophies at a gala awards ceremony attended by H.E. Jihad Abdullah Al Fanna, Member of the Majlis Ash Shura representing the Wilayat of Sur, and Dr Khamis Al Jabri, Oman Sail CEO.

Optimist Overall

  1. Abdullatif Al Qasmi – Mussanah Sailing School 
  2. Hassam Al Wahaibi – Marina Bandar Rowdha Sailing School 
  3. Firas Al Nabhani – Mussanah Sailing School

The best young sailor in this Category: Saja Al Mukhaini – Sur Sailing School

  1. Elyas Al Fudhaili – Mussanah Sailing School
  2. Nibras Al Oaisi – Mussanah Sailing School
  3. Salim Al Alawi – Sur Sailing School

  1. Abdulmalik Al Hinai – Al Mouj Muscat Sailing School 
  2. Mohammed Al Qasmi – Al Mouj Muscat Sailing School

Saleh Al Jabri, Event Project Manager, said, “The performance of all of our sailors this week has been exciting to see. Especially those making their debut in new classes. It shows that the pathway is working and the sailors are progressing well. The top performing sailors will now join the national squad and form teams capable of representing Oman in international competition at youth level. It is our hope that every sailor at our Sailing Schools continues to develop, gain experience and become part of a thriving, successful national team that will proudly fly the flag for Oman around the world for many years to come.”

The Oman Sailing Championship 2022 was organised by Oman Sail and held under the authority of the Oman Maritime Sports Committee.
