Non-Resident Indians can participate in Lok Sabha Election 2024

Any Indian citizen residing abroad, who hasn’t acquired foreign citizenship and is 18 or older by January 1 of the respective year, is eligible to apply (Form 6A) for registration in the voter roll of their constituency. The application should be submitted to the relevant Electoral Registration Officer (ERO).

Information about the EROs, their particulars, and addresses, as well as Form 6A and guidelines for completing the form, can be accessed from the official website of the Election Commission of India.

Non-Resident Indians need to apply for registration/enrollment as a voter with Form 6A before the Electoral Registration Officer / Assistant Electoral Registration Officer of the constituency within which the place of ordinary residence of the applicant in India as given in his/her passport falls or send it by post or can be filed online on the website of the Chief Electoral Officer of the concerned state or website of the Election Commission of India. While filing Form 6A online, the copy of the passport and copies of other necessary documents like visa should also be uploaded.

  • Simply fill out Form 6A and submit it to your Electoral Registration Officer. Can’t make it in person? No worries! You can apply online or grab a form from your nearest Indian Mission

  • Once enrolled, you can vote in person at your registered constituency. Let your voice be heard, no matter where you are!

Form 6A can be acquired by downloading it from the website of the Chief Electoral Officer of the respective state or from the website of the Election Commission of India. Additionally, Form 6A is provided free of charge at Indian Missions located in foreign countries.

Moreover, Booth Level Officers in every polling station area across India have been instructed to distribute blank Form 6A to families of overseas Indians residing in India, enabling them to forward it to individuals living abroad.

Following enrollment, an NRI elector has the option to personally vote in an election within the constituency where they are registered as an NRI elector. The elector must carry their original passport when casting their vote.

An NRI Elector is a citizen of India, who is absent from the country owing to employment, education, etc, and has not acquired citizenship of any other country. They are eligible to be registered as a voter at the address mentioned in their Indian passport. However, Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) have not been given any voting rights.
