London-based doctor and popular YouTuber Dr. Sangram Patil was detained at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on Saturday morning (January 10, 2026) in connection with a defamation case filed by a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) functionary, police officials confirmed.

Dr. Patil, who arrived in Mumbai from London, was taken aside by officials of the Mumbai Crime Branch for questioning shortly after landing. He was detained for several hours along with his wife as part of a preliminary investigation. After questioning, he was released upon being served a notice under Section 35(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).

Under this provision, the police may issue a notice of appearance instead of making an arrest in cases where the alleged offence carries a relatively short prison sentence. The notice requires the accused to cooperate with the investigation and appear before the authorities when summoned.

“Dr. Patil was detained upon his arrival from London. He and his wife were questioned and subsequently released after preliminary inquiry,” a senior police official said, adding that the investigation is ongoing.

  • The action stems from a complaint lodged last month at the N. M. Joshi Marg police station by BJP media cell functionary Nikhil Bhamre

  • According to the complaint, Dr. Patil allegedly shared false and defamatory content against the ruling party and made derogatory remarks targeting its leaders through social media platforms

Police officials stated that the complaint specifically refers to objectionable posts allegedly shared from two Facebook accounts, one of which is said to belong to Dr. Patil. The complainant has claimed that the content had the potential to incite hostility and create animosity among different sections of society.

Originally from Maharashtra, Dr. Patil is now a British citizen and is known for his strong social media presence, particularly on YouTube, where he comments on political and social issues. His videos attract a large audience, including viewers from the Indian diaspora.

Investigators said the case has been under scrutiny since its registration, and further examination of the alleged social media content is underway. Officials added that Dr. Patil has been asked to cooperate fully with the investigation as required under the BNSS notice.
