Panjab University (PU) has witnessed a significant rise in the number of Non-Resident Indian (NRI) students enrolling this academic year, marking a sharp departure from fluctuating trends seen over the past few sessions. According to official figures, 143 NRI students are currently registered across various teaching departments, more than double the 59 recorded in the previous academic year.

In recent years, NRI enrolment at the university has shown considerable variation. The intake stood at 82 students in 2022–23 before dropping to 45 in 2023–24. This was followed by a mild recovery last session, making the current surge notable both in scale and consistency. University officials view the increase as an encouraging sign of renewed interest among overseas Indians in public higher education institutions in India.

The enrolled NRI students are spread across disciplines such as biochemistry, economics, law, psychology, management, engineering, applied sciences and interdisciplinary programmes. Professional courses, in particular, continue to attract a larger share of NRI applicants, reflecting global demand for industry-oriented qualifications.

  • University officials say efforts are underway to strengthen international outreach, particularly to students from economically disadvantaged regions
  • Enhanced use of digital platforms and peer-led promotion are among the strategies being explored to highlight academic opportunities and financial support available at the institution

The rise in enrolments comes at a time when NRI admission policies across Indian universities are under closer scrutiny. Following observations by the Supreme Court last year regarding the misuse of NRI quotas—especially in medical education—PU has initiated a review of its own eligibility norms. Although the court’s remarks were directed at medical colleges, the university has submitted a proposal aimed at tightening criteria to ensure that the quota benefits genuine candidates. The proposal is expected to be taken up by the competent authorities in the near future.

Alongside NRIs, Panjab University has also recorded growth in its foreign student population, though overall numbers remain modest. The university currently hosts 48 foreign nationals, compared to 24 last year. These students are enrolled in a diverse range of subjects, including pharmacy, computer science, forensic sciences, biotechnology, languages, theatre studies and law. Many are supported through the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) scholarship programme, while others are self-financed.
