NRI’s Reddit post on family’s repeated financial demands sparks debate over boundaries

Overseas worker says years of supporting parents and funding brother’s wedding were followed by fresh requests to help buy a house, prompting widespread online discussion

A Reddit post by an Indian working overseas has triggered a wider conversation on the financial expectations often placed on Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) after the user described years of supporting his family before being asked to contribute more money towards his elder brother’s home purchase.

According to the post, the man had already provided around ₹19 lakh for his brother’s wedding, including a gift and a loan, while also clearing several family debts, assisting his parents during the Covid-19 pandemic and sending monthly financial support for nearly a decade.

The user said his parents initially wanted him to contribute ₹40 lakh as a down payment for a ₹1.1 crore apartment that would be registered solely in his brother’s name. After he refused, the family later requested a reduced contribution of ₹15-20 lakh for the same property.

The overseas worker wrote that the financial aspect was less upsetting than what he described as a lack of emotional support and appreciation from his family. He ended his post by asking fellow Reddit users whether he was overlooking something in the situation. Hindustan Times noted that it could not independently verify the claims made in the Reddit post.

The discussion attracted thousands of reactions, with many users encouraging the man to establish clear financial boundaries and prioritise his own long-term security. Several commenters argued that his brother, who now has a stable job, should manage his own finances, while others advised that any future financial contribution towards property should be accompanied by legal ownership or documentation.

The viral post has reignited debate on the pressures faced by many Indians living abroad, balancing financial responsibilities towards family members in India with their own commitments, including mortgages, savings and retirement planning. While opinions varied, the discussion underscored the growing conversation around setting healthy financial limits within families.
