Oman Sailing Championship 2022 opens after a week’s delay due to heavy rains

Seventy-five sailors from Oman Sail’s sailing schools at Al Mouj Muscat, Marina Bandar Al Rowdha, Mussanah and Sur are competing for a place in the Oman National Team for international events.

Muscat: Due to prolonged heavy rains across the country, the Oman Sailing Championship 2022, has now begun on its rescheduled date from July 24-27. Instead of July 17 as previously planned.

Seventy-five sailors from Oman Sail’s sailing schools at Al Mouj Muscat, Marina Bandar Al Rowdha, Mussanah and Sur are competing for a place in the Oman National Team for international events.

On Sunday, July 24, sailors in the Optimist, Diam24, ILCA 4, ILCA 6, ILCA 7 and iQFOiL classes, along with athletes from the SailFree programme competed in the RS Venture class for the first time in championship history, put their training to the test for gold, silver, and bronze medals.

Said Al Araimi, Sur Sailing School Manager, said, “The recent rains have left us with little choice except to postpone the start of the championship in the interests of the safety of our sailors and the local community. 

“The Sailing Championship, gives us an exciting opportunity to gauge the progress of the talented sailors together from our four sailing schools and select the top performers for forthcoming international competition.”

Organised by Oman Sail and held under the authority of the Oman Maritime Sports Committee, there will be 20 races and no more than five each day in the iQFOiL competition and 12 with a maximum of three in all other classes. 

The top three sailors in each class will receive prizes and be considered to be part of the Oman National Team for upcoming national, regional and international competition.
