In an interview with Hindustan Times, Oman captain Jatinder Singh opened up about his excitement ahead of the Asia Cup 2025, where his team will compete against heavyweights India, Pakistan, and the UAE in Group A.

The Ludhiana-born cricketer, who moved to Oman in 2003 and has since played over 120 international matches, said he is eagerly looking forward to playing against stars like Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill, reported hindustantimes.com.

“Being in Group A is a massive challenge but also a blessing. Playing against India and Pakistan is never easy, but it’s the kind of challenge that makes you grow as a cricketer,” Jatinder said. “Personally, I look forward to interacting with players like Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav, Saim Ayub, and Fakhar Zaman. There’s so much to learn from their mindset and preparation.”

The 36-year-old, who previously interacted with Indian youngsters Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma during the Emerging Men’s T20 Asia Cup in Muscat, praised them as “talented and humble.” He added that he is eager to meet them again on the big stage

‘Dream come true’ moment for Oman cricket

Oman begin their Asia Cup campaign against Pakistan on September 12, followed by their high-profile clash with India on September 19 at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. “It’s a dream come true, honestly. I never imagined leading Oman against India and Pakistan. It’s a huge responsibility, but also a great motivation,” Jatinder said.

He added that Oman’s young, fearless squad could surprise many with their energy and hunger to perform. “Sometimes when you’re new, you don’t carry the pressure of reputation – you just go out there and express yourself. This Asia Cup is less about individual names and more about showcasing the collective spirit of Oman cricket.”

Oman’s cricket journey and future growth

Cricket’s popularity in Oman has grown rapidly, helped by strong infrastructure investment and the presence of a large Indian-origin community. The country co-hosted the 2021 T20 World Cup with the UAE, which Jatinder said gave Oman massive global visibility.

“When I started, facilities were very basic, but now Oman has world-class infrastructure, professional coaching, and a strong domestic system,” he said. “Young players here have opportunities we never had, and that’s why Oman cricket is competing at the world stage today.”
