Google and Nvidia Respond: Both leaders acknowledged Modi’s proactive approach to leveraging AI for India’s development. “Every time I meet with him, he is eager to dive deeper into how AI can shape India’s future,” Huang remarked, praising the Prime Minister’s engagement with the technology
In a significant step forward for India’s technology landscape, global tech giants Google and Nvidia have announced plans to deepen their engagement in the country, particularly in the realm of artificial intelligence (AI). This news comes after Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, and Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a high-level roundtable held at the Lotte New York Palace Hotel on September 22, 2024.
The meeting was part of Modi’s three-day visit to the United States, where he engaged with US-based tech leaders specializing in cutting-edge technologies like AI, quantum computing, and semiconductors. Both Pichai and Huang praised Modi’s vision for a “Digital India” and highlighted his focus on AI’s potential to revolutionize sectors like healthcare, education, and agriculture.
Speaking after the meeting, Pichai emphasized Modi’s commitment to ensuring AI benefits Indian society. “The Prime Minister has a clear vision, aiming to make AI serve the people of India,” Pichai said. “He is pushing us to explore how AI can transform key sectors such as healthcare and education, and we are committed to supporting this vision with infrastructure that will drive this transition.” Pichai also noted Google’s increasing investment in AI initiatives within India.
In line with the “Make in India” and “Design in India” campaigns, Pichai stated that Modi has consistently encouraged Google to focus on local applications of AI. “We are eager to develop AI solutions tailored to India’s unique needs,” Pichai added, underscoring Google’s intention to ramp up efforts in the region.
As AI continues to grow in importance across industries, these commitments from Google and Nvidia signal a bright future for India’s role in the global tech ecosystem
Jensen Huang echoed Pichai’s sentiments, highlighting India’s potential to become a leader in AI adoption. “India has a rich talent pool of computer scientists and startups, and AI presents a tremendous opportunity for the country,” Huang said. Nvidia plans to expand its partnerships in India, including scaling up AI infrastructure in collaboration with Yotta Data Services, which aims to have 32,768 GPU units available by 2025 to meet the growing demand for AI workloads.
Huang also emphasized Nvidia’s collaborations with Indian academic institutions. “Each Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) now hosts an Nvidia AI Center of Excellence, where we are training both professionals and students to tackle the complexities of AI,” he stated, highlighting the importance of nurturing AI talent in India.
