Prakash Gupta has taken the helm as the new Indian Consul General in Seattle, marking a significant milestone in the burgeoning relationship between India and the United States.

A reception held on December 7 at Seattle University’s RoundGlass India Center celebrated Gupta’s appointment to lead the forthcoming Indian Consulate in the greater Seattle area.

Notable attendees included public officials, representatives from other Consulates, and leaders from the Indian community, with a welcome address delivered by Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell, according to nwasianweekly.com.

The establishment of the Consulate, announced seven years ago, underscores the robust ties between India and the U.S., particularly in the realms of technology and defense. The event’s timing reflects the strategic importance of this relationship.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the new role, Gupta stated, “Seattle is a wonderful city, and the Pacific Northwest region is filled with exciting and innovative businesses and communities that include a dynamic and growing Indian diaspora. I am honored to fly the Indian flag for the first time here in Seattle and also humbled to be a part of this historic expansion of India’s relationship with the United States.”

Cities, such as Bothell East, Mill Creek East, and Redmond, boast Indian populations exceeding 20%. Notably, the greater Seattle area ranks as the sixth-largest Indian population center in the United States

Gupta brings a wealth of experience to his new position, having previously served in diplomatic roles in Indonesia, New York, and China.

The Consulate’s jurisdiction encompasses Washington, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Alaska, Nebraska, Wyoming, North Dakota, and South Dakota, making it one of the largest geographically among Indian Consulates in the country. Among Gupta’s key initiatives is the establishment of a direct flight between India and Seattle.

Washington state is home to the second-largest foreign-born population of Indian citizens in the U.S., with their numbers having doubled over the past decade, primarily in the tech sector. Certain cities, such as Bothell East, Mill Creek East, and Redmond, boast Indian populations exceeding 20%. Notably, the greater Seattle area ranks as the sixth-largest Indian population center in the United States.
