Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-serving monarch in British history died on Thursday. She was 96.

She took the throne on February 6, 1952 and ruled for 70 years and 127 days.

 

“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon,” Buckingham Palace statement said

 

The eldest of her four children, Charles, Prince of Wales, 73, is the oldest heir apparent in British history. He will become king immediately.

Buckingham Palace announced her death in a statement. There will be 10-day of national mourning.

“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon,” Buckingham Palace statement said.

“The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow,” the palace statement added.
