Teen battling depression takes extreme step; fourth suicide in same complex in eight months
A 17-year-old college student, the daughter of a real estate developer, died by suicide after jumping from the 23rd floor of her Goregaon East high-rise apartment. The teenager, who had been undergoing treatment for depression for two years, was scheduled to leave for London in just 15 days to pursue higher studies, reported timesofindia.indiatimes.com.
At the time of the incident, the student was in her bedroom while her mother was in the kitchen and her grandparents were in another room. Her father was away at work. The fall was witnessed by the building receptionist. Police have registered an accidental death report (ADR) and are recording statements from the girl’s doctor and family members.
Police confirmed that no suicide note was found, but the girl’s parents said she had been struggling with depression, which may have led to her tragic decision
Investigators learned that the family had recently visited the UK to check facilities at her college before returning to Mumbai earlier this month.
This is not the first tragedy at the complex. On July 2, a 19-year-old student died by suicide after being denied entry to Mumbai airport for not carrying a required travel permit for his Germany flight. Unable to cope, he abandoned his luggage at Juhu beach and later jumped from the 42nd floor of the same building.
According to Aarey police, this marks the fourth suicide — including three students — reported from the same housing complex in the past eight months.
