Thailand and Malaysia have emerged as the most popular visa-free international destinations for Indian travellers, according to new data from digital travel platform Agoda. The findings highlight a growing preference among Indians for destinations that are easy to enter and offer a mix of culture, leisure and value for money.

Agoda analysed accommodation search data from India between 1 and 18 January 2026 for travel dates in February and March 2026. Among visa-free destinations, Thailand ranked first, followed by Malaysia. Indonesia continued to lead among visa-on-arrival markets. When visa-free and visa-on-arrival destinations were combined, Thailand topped the list, followed by Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and the Maldives.

These destinations remain favourites because they offer beaches, city life, adventure activities and cultural experiences, all within short flying distances from India. Sri Lanka recorded a strong 61 per cent rise in accommodation searches compared to last year, supported by its close proximity and diverse attractions. The Maldives also continues to attract Indian travellers seeking luxury island holidays and premium short-haul getaways.

Beyond the top five, the Philippines ranked sixth and saw a 73 per cent increase in searches, driven by interest in beach holidays and water sports

Nepal ranked seventh, followed by Kazakhstan, Bhutan and Laos. Laos recorded the fastest growth, with a 97 per cent rise in searches, showing increasing curiosity about culturally rich and less crowded destinations in Southeast Asia.

Gaurav Malik, Country Director for the Indian Subcontinent and Indian Ocean Islands at Agoda, said visa accessibility is becoming a key factor in travel decisions. He added that most Indians would travel more often if visa restrictions were removed, and many are keen to explore new and diverse destinations.
