All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Santanu Sen has been suspended for the rest of the Monsoon Session by the Rajya Sabha, (Upper House of the Indian Parliament) Chairman Venkaiah Naidu.

The action came a day after, as Sen during a debate over the Pegasus row, had snatched the papers from Union IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and tore them on Thursday.

He has been suspended for the remaining period of the Monsoon session of the parliament.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs V Muraleedharan had moved a motion for Santanu Sen’s suspension on Thursday. During proceedings in Rajya Sabha, Santanu Sen said in the House that Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri had abused him in the House when he was targeting the IT minister while making his statement on the Pegasus issue.

As chaos reigned in the House,  Santanu Sen snatched away the papers from Vaishnaw and tore them up.

During the House proceedings on Friday, Chairman Venkaiah Naidu said, “Santanu Sen, please withdraw from the House. Allow the House to function.” Following an uproar that started during TMC MP Derek O’Brien’s statement over Thursday’s incident, Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 12 pm.

Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu asked Santanu Sen to leave the House, as a voice vote passed the motion.

“The only business that could be transacted so far was a 4-hour discussion on Covid-19 issues and the hour-long reply of the minister concerned,” said Venkaiah Naidu.

Objections were raised by the TMC members who protested against the way in which the motion was brought. It had not been listed in the day’s business.
