There are Indian students enrolled in Canada, Germany and Italy. They are stuck in India while classes in the universities have resumed
Indian students who have taken admission in foreign universities or those who came to India during peak of the second wave, are stuck in the country either due to travel ban imposed by India or by the countries they chose to study.
There are Indian students enrolled in Canada, Germany and Italy. Some new students have taken admission in some universities abroad but have yet to see the campuses. They are continuing with online classes and waiting to travel when travel bans are lifted.
Many other students came to India during the peak of the second wave either to join their parents or to take part in the blast rites of their close kin. Soon after their arrival, many countries imposed a travel ban on flights coming from India. Mostly the travel bans started in the last week of April and still continuing.
Germany has put India as a “country with a significantly elevated risk of infection (virus variant area)”. This means only German nationals, permanent residents of Germany, health workers and a few other groups are allowed to travel to Germany from India.
In a recent document posted on its website the German Mission in India said, “The Federal Republic of Germany has designated India as a country with a significantly elevated risk of infection (high incidence area) with effect from July 7, 2021.”
Indian Embassy in Italy is exploring possibilities to lift the travel ban with the Italian authorities.
Similarly, new quarantine rules for Indians in Serbia has put Canada-bound students in a fix. The rule came so suddenly that many students (some 200) were stranded at the Belgrade airport with a requirement to undergo seven-day quarantine put by the Serbian Government. The Indian Embassy in Serbia had to intervene and facilitate onward travel following the students’ appeals for help.
Indian students enrolled in Italy are no different. Before the travel ban (April 28), those who came to India are still stuck in the country while their classes have started. Italy has imposed a travel ban which is still continuing. Many students have their exams in physical mode. They are worried about their career.
