UAE suspends flights and shuts embassy as Iran strikes escalate across Gulf
The United Arab Emirates has announced special evacuation flights to assist stranded passengers as tensions rise across the Gulf following fresh Iranian missile and drone attacks.
The UAE strongly condemned the strikes, calling them a “dangerous escalation”. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Iran’s ambassador, Reza Ameri, and handed over a formal protest note. It said the attacks were a clear violation of the country’s sovereignty and international law. The UAE has also closed its embassy in Tehran and withdrawn its ambassador and diplomatic staff.
Explosions were reported in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Doha, Manama and Kuwait City as Iran continued its retaliation against US-Israeli air raids. Three people have reportedly been killed in the UAE.
Dubai International Airport suffered minor damage after a suspected aerial strike hit part of a terminal building. Airport authorities said the situation was quickly contained, though four staff members were injured. Several airlines, including Emirates, Qatar Airways, IndiGo and Akasa Air, have suspended flights due to regional airspace closures
Trading on the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange and the Dubai Financial Market has been halted until March 3.
Meanwhile, Amazon’s cloud arm, Amazon Web Services, reported power and connectivity issues at data centres in the UAE and Bahrain after nearby strikes.
