UAE authorities have arrested multiple recruitment agents accused of targeting Indian workers through illegal hiring practices, in a crackdown confirmed within the past 24 hours. The operation is part of a broader enforcement drive aimed at curbing labour exploitation and regulating recruitment channels across the Gulf.
Officials stated that the agents were operating without proper licences and were charging excessive fees to workers in exchange for false or misleading job offers. In several cases, victims were promised skilled positions with competitive salaries but were instead placed in low-paying roles or left without employment upon arrival.
“Illegal recruitment practices undermine both worker protections and labour market integrity,” authorities said, adding that strict action would continue against those violating regulations. Investigators also recovered documents and digital records indicating coordinated activity across multiple recruitment networks.
Indian officials have welcomed the crackdown, urging prospective workers to rely only on government-approved recruitment agencies. Community organisations have also intensified awareness campaigns, highlighting the risks of unverified job offers and the financial burden imposed by illegal agents.
Labour experts note that such practices persist due to strong demand for overseas employment, particularly among first-time migrants. “Transparency and regulation are essential to prevent exploitation at the recruitment stage,” analysts observed.
For Indian workers, the development serves as a critical reminder to verify employment contracts and recruitment credentials before making financial commitments. It also reflects ongoing efforts by Gulf governments to modernise labour systems and align them with international standards.
