A significant delegation of UK universities and education leaders is presently in India for an extensive five-day visit aimed at fostering collaboration, expanding internationalization efforts, and exploring dual-degree opportunities in higher education. This historic delegation, consisting of representatives from 31 UK higher education institutions and affiliated bodies, is actively engaging with key stakeholders in Indian academia and government bodies across Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and Chennai. Organized and coordinated by the Department for Business and Trade (DBT), this mission underscores the UK’s commitment to strengthening educational bonds with India.

The delegation, which arrived in Delhi on September 17, is participating in the India-UK Higher Education Conference scheduled for September 18 and 19 in Delhi. The primary focus of these discussions will revolve around Transnational Education (TNE) and aim to facilitate the expansion of higher education partnerships between institutions in both countries.

The International Education Champion representing the UK Government expressed excitement about this visit, stating, “I am delighted to be in India with a large and very engaged delegation of UK universities and officials who are eager to take forward partnerships and collaborations in all aspects of teaching, learning, research, and innovation. It’s well established that internationalization of universities enhances the quality of education systems and leads to mutually beneficial impact.”

Some institutions are already offering courses in emerging areas such as Disaster Management and Clinical Trials, with the hope of expanding these offerings in the near future

Furthermore, the representative noted the Indian education system’s commitment to implementing reforms and opening new avenues for partnerships, emphasizing the delegation’s goal to establish strong, impactful collaborations that empower young people to address global challenges, unlock their potential, and generate valuable knowledge for humanity.

Building upon last year’s deliberations, the conference will also emphasize deeper India-UK partnerships in science, research, and innovation, with the aim of addressing global challenges collaboratively. Alison Barrett MBE, Director India at the British Council, highlighted the significance of this event, saying, “The India-UK Higher Education Conference will serve as an opportunity to build upon the constructive discussions and initiatives from last year, which have further strengthened educational partnerships between the two countries.”

Barrett further revealed that the conference would feature the impact of the Going Global Partnerships program, which has supported 70 partnerships between 100 Indian and 55 UK higher educational institutions. Additionally, industry academia grants will be announced to support closer ties between industry and academia in curriculum and course development, ultimately producing graduates who are well-prepared for the job market. Some institutions are already offering courses in emerging areas such as Disaster Management and Clinical Trials, with the hope of expanding these offerings in the near future.
