Ukrainian Creator’s Comparison of Indian and European Housewarming Traditions Sparks Online Discussion

Viral social media post highlights cultural differences, with many praising India’s emphasis on gratitude and religious rituals

A Ukrainian content creator has sparked widespread discussion on social media after sharing her experience of attending a traditional Indian housewarming ceremony, describing it as “a completely different world” compared with similar celebrations in Europe. Her observations have resonated with thousands of viewers and prompted conversations about cultural traditions and family values.

Sandra On, who regularly posts content exploring cultural differences between India and Europe, said she had assumed housewarming celebrations followed a similar pattern everywhere. However, attending a griha pravesh ceremony in India changed that perception.

In her Instagram video, Sandra explained that the celebration began early in the morning with prayers led by Hindu priests rather than an evening gathering centred on food and socialising. She noted that the rituals focused on seeking blessings for protection, prosperity, peace and happiness in the family’s new home before breakfast or other festivities took place. The ceremony continued with devotional music, chanting and additional religious observances before guests gathered for lunch.

By contrast, she said housewarming parties in Europe are generally informal events where friends and relatives meet in the evening, share a meal, tour the new home and spend time socialising.

  • Sandra said the biggest difference was not the rituals themselves but the values they reflected

  • She observed that Indian celebrations place gratitude and spiritual blessings at the centre of the occasion, treating a new home as the beginning of a family’s shared life rather than simply a property purchase.

The video attracted strong engagement online, with many users explaining the significance of housewarming ceremonies across different regions of India. Several commenters highlighted that traditions vary by state and community, with some ceremonies beginning before dawn and featuring rituals such as Vastu Puja, Homa and Satyanarayana Vratham. Others said the post offered an appreciative perspective on Indian customs and cultural heritage.
