Village women need to be sensitised about issues related to NRI matrimony: NCW

Issues like impounding of passport, extradition, custody of children, and redressal in abandonment of children and wife come up when NRI marriages get disrupted

National Commission for Women (NCW) called for awareness among village women about NRI matrimony and rights of women in such cases keeping in mind constraints and challenges in dealing with issues like impounding of passport, extradition, custody of children, and redressal in abandonment of children and wife.

The NCW joint secretary A Asholi Chalai attended a function and spoke on ‘Rights of Women in NRI Matrimonial Issues’. The function was organised by Andhra Pradesh CID police in collaboration with NCW at Acharya Nagarjuna University in Guntur on Tuesday, Deccan Chronicle reported.

“Parents need to be careful before giving their daughters in marriage to NRIs. She asked police and legal authorities to extend help to affected women.”

Senior police officials, police inspectors and some Mahila Police personnel attended the event.

She called upon women police to create awareness among women in the villages and ward secretariats about the issues related to NRI marriages.

The report quoted AP Women’s Commission chairperson Vasireddy Padma, who advised “parents need to be careful before giving their daughters in marriage to NRIs. She asked police and legal authorities to extend help to affected women.”

Andhra Pradesh Non-Resident Telugu Society (APNRTS) president M. Venkat discussed the government provisions and assistance in such cases.
