The tragic death of 30-year-old Indian student Vijay Kumar Sheoran in Worcester, England, has sparked grief in his hometown in Haryana and renewed calls for diplomatic support for Indian nationals studying abroad. Sheoran, a native of Jagrambas village in Charkhi Dadri district, was found with severe injuries after a stabbing incident on Barbourne Road in the early hours of November 25. He later died in hospital.

British police have arrested six individuals in connection with the case. Five suspects were taken into custody on suspicion of murder and later released on bail while investigations continue. A sixth detainee was released without charges. Authorities are appealing for witnesses and CCTV footage to piece together the sequence of events.

  • Sheoran’s decision to study abroad marked a significant personal transition. Earlier this year, he resigned from his government job at the Central Board of Excise and Customs to pursue higher education in the United Kingdom
  • He had enrolled at the University of the West of England in Bristol, hoping to enhance his qualifications and explore better career prospects

His family is devastated by the sudden loss. In a letter addressed to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Sheoran’s brother Ravi Kumar requested urgent diplomatic intervention to ensure a thorough investigation and expedite the process of repatriating the body to India. He described the family’s struggle with foreign legal processes, documentation challenges and high costs involved in bringing his brother home.

The appeal has gained attention in Haryana, where BJP MLA Sunil Satpal Sangwan expressed shock and urged both state and central authorities to support the family. He called for a transparent, timely inquiry and assistance in the repatriation process. Local leaders and community members have also come forward, demanding justice and clarity about the circumstances surrounding the attack.

For many Indian families, Sheoran’s death highlights the vulnerabilities faced by international students, particularly in unfamiliar environments. Although the UK remains a major destination for higher education, cases of violence occasionally spark concerns about student safety.
