Rupinder Brar, Additional Director General – Tourism, Government of India, was of the opinion that the time had come for tourism boards and stakeholders in the South Asia region to co-create packages to promote the region as one single entity to offer “diverse and comprehensive” experiences to long haul travellers. Speaking at an event organised by the Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI) to announce their annual convention in Sri Lanka, Brar said that informal discussions had started and hoped that the business potential would drive countries to think of a coordinated approach to make the region a tourism hub of the world.

The region had a shared culture and heritage, especially Buddhist heritage. So, it was the right time to co-create packages to attract tourists from South East Asia and Far East regions. Citing the latest TripAdvisor data for the region, Brar said that there was a renewed interest to travel to India and to the region since the country had announced the opening of international borders.
