A 43-year-old New York woman has pleaded guilty to taking part in an international human smuggling operation that brought people, mainly Indian nationals, into the United States from Canada.

Stacey Taylor, of Plattsburgh, New York, admitted to conspiracy to engage in alien smuggling and four counts of smuggling for profit, the US Department of Justice said.

The case relates to an incident in January 2025, when US Border Patrol agents stopped Taylor’s vehicle near Churubusco, New York. Four men were found inside — three Indian nationals and one Canadian citizen.

  • According to court documents, the men had crossed the US-Canada border on foot through a wooded area without inspection and in freezing conditions

  • They then entered Taylor’s waiting vehicle, which was driven away from the border.

Investigators said Taylor had received coordinates showing where the men were waiting, along with instructions to collect them. She later acknowledged that she had picked them up and expected to be paid.

A review of her mobile phone also uncovered messages indicating that she had allegedly participated in several other smuggling operations in the days before the January incident.

Taylor was arrested following the January operation but was later implicated in suspected smuggling activity in August and September 2025, according to the Justice Department.

She is due to be sentenced on December 3 and faces a statutory minimum sentence of five years in prison. The final punishment will be determined by a federal judge after considering sentencing guidelines and other legal factors.

The case was investigated by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Customs and Border Protection and the Border Patrol, with support from Joint Task Force Alpha, a US Justice Department initiative targeting major human-smuggling and trafficking networks.

The case highlights continued US enforcement efforts against organised smuggling operations along the northern border, including those involving Indian nationals.
