Indians in US upset with immigration laws

Some Indians have decided to take the day off to highlight their plight

Many Indians in the USA have decided to highlight their immigration woes and urge the US Congress to pass the Eagle Act, which removes the country cap and neutralizes the immigration system. These Indians have decided to take the day off to highlight their plight. Globenewsinsider quoted one of the Indians and a volunteer for Immigration Voice who said that they were “currently facing a humanitarian crisis”.

According to the volunteer, “Anyone born in India is being treated unfairly by the US immigration system. It has to end. I could not see my family in India earlier due to COVID and now due to lack of visa appointments in India. My friend who moved with me to the US in 2008 got a green card in 2011. and became a citizen in 2017. But I’m still on visa, because of the wrong immigration system that discriminates against your place of birth.”

Indian American Anang Mittal, who used to work for US Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, holds the Democratic leadership for the situation. He was quoted saying: “Indian Americans are one of the most successful, highly educated and hardworking groups in America; it is appalling that they are subject to some of the oldest laws. In the last Congress, the Eagle Act was passed unanimously in the Senate with more than 330 votes in the House but the Democrats failed to reconcile and pass it,” he said. According to him, Democrats failed to engage in a meaningful conversation such as passing the Eagle Act.

According to the CATO Research Institute, if the law is not changed, about 30 per cent of Indians currently waiting for green cards will die in the green card backlog

Mary Barthelson, who ran for political office in Virginia, also agreed that the Eagle Act should be passed. There are many Indians in the county but she did not agree that Democrats were putting the bill on hold for further negotiations. “Immigrants suffered a lot under the Trump administration, things have improved under President Biden and the Democratic leadership. We introduced the American Citizenship Act in January 2021, which will help hardworking Indians in America but Republicans don’t want to pass our bill.” When asked about the Eagle Act, Barthelson was quoted saying, “It will be difficult to see the bill on the floor.”

A source close to the House leadership said that the US speaker, Nancy Pelosi, had privately agreed to pass the Eagle Act, but the Democratic Party’s election committee was trying to help weaker Democrats win the November election.

According to the CATO Research Institute, if the law is not changed, about 30 per cent of Indians currently waiting for green cards will die in the green card backlog.

This was just the beginning, said one of the organizers leading the “Take a Day Off for Eagle Act”. We come from Gandhi’s land. If the bill is not passed by November, we will sit on a dharna in Washington DC. According to a survey by Fact2020, only 30% of the total population of Indians in the US have a green card. H-1B visa holders are at 67 per cent. F-1, J-1, or M-1 visas stand at 14 percent. Another 5 percent have L-1 visas.
