The Department of Welfare of Non-Resident Tamils, which has established the Non-Resident Tamils’ Welfare Board, is inviting non-resident Tamils aged 18 to 55 years living abroad or in other Indian states to register as members on the official website https://nrtamils.tn.gov.in. To encourage registration, the ₹200 fee is waived for the initial period from May 15 to August 15 this year.

In a statement on Saturday, the Commissioner of the Department of Welfare of Non-Resident Tamils explained that the board registers members under two categories: non-resident Tamils living abroad and non-resident Tamils living in other Indian states.

  • To support non-resident Tamils, the department has set up a 24/7 toll-free helpline: 18003093793 (within India), 8069009901 (outside India), and 8069009900 (missed call)

  • Additionally, pre-departure orientation training centers have been established in seven district collectorate offices: Thanjavur, Ramanathapuram, Perambalur, Kanyakumari, Sivagangai, Villupuram, and Pudukottai, to ensure safe and legal migration to foreign countries

Eligible individuals for the overseas category include those working or studying abroad with an Indian passport and necessary documents, as well as those intending to go abroad after obtaining emigration clearance. Tamils residing in other Indian states for over six months are eligible under the second category.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin initiated the establishment of the board in response to the recent increase in Tamil migration for employment, education, and business purposes, aiming to ensure the welfare of these individuals. The board offers several welfare schemes, including personal accident insurance, critical illness insurance, educational assistance, and marriage assistance.
