Indian-Americans eye progressive reforms as Trump and Harris compete for support

Despite differences in candidate support, the Indian-American community remains united in its desire for a government that addresses its core concerns

With the U.S. presidential election fast approaching, the Indian-American community is closely watching as Kamala Harris and Donald Trump vie for the White House. This influential diaspora, which has grown significantly in numbers and impact, sees the election as a critical moment for shaping policies on immigration, healthcare, and social reform, gujaratsamachar.com reported.

The 2024 Indian-American Attitudes Survey (IAAS) shows that 61% of Indian Americans support Kamala Harris, while 31% back Donald Trump. This preference underscores key concerns within the community, especially around progressive issues like minority rights, women’s health, and environmental sustainability. The 2022 overturning of Roe v. Wade, which eliminated constitutional protection for abortion rights, has made women’s rights a central issue for Indian-American voters, many of whom view Harris’s stance on abortion rights as a necessary check on restrictive policies.

As the election approaches, the Indian diaspora looks forward to seeing progressive changes that respect the values of opportunity and inclusivity that initially drew them to the United States

Social issues aside, many Indian-Americans also hope for healthcare reforms. With U.S. medical costs among the highest in the world, affordable healthcare ranks high on their list of priorities. Alongside healthcare, lax gun control laws are a point of contention, with frequent news of school shootings reinforcing a desire for stricter regulations to ensure community safety.

On immigration, many Indian-Americans seek friendlier policies that support legal immigrants rather than vilify them. Easing H1-B visa restrictions is a common request, as the visa’s current limitations place significant stress on immigrant families and professionals. A large number in the community argue that reform is necessary to retain skilled workers and ensure their contributions to American society.

In terms of international relations, Indian-Americans hope that the U.S.-India relationship continues to thrive, regardless of who wins the election. Many believe that the U.S. recognizes India’s strategic and economic importance, given the nation’s IT sector, pharmaceutical contributions, and skilled labor force.
