Defending champion Aman Sehrawat and others await confirmation over participation due to ongoing issues with WFI’s recognition
Indian wrestlers, including defending champion Aman Sehrawat, are concerned about their participation in the upcoming Zagreb Open in Croatia, scheduled for February 5-9, 2025. The event is part of the United World Wrestling’s ranking series, which Sehrawat has dominated in the past two editions, reported timesofindia.indiatimes.com.
Wrestlers are facing uncertainty due to the ongoing issue with WFI’s recognition by the government and lack of clearance from SAI
Along with Sehrawat, other Indian men and women wrestlers who have submitted their entries are also waiting for confirmation. The root cause of the delay lies in the government’s refusal to acknowledge the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), led by Sanjay Singh.
The UWW has made it clear that only entries routed through WFI will
be accepted, further complicating matters
Earlier, an ad-hoc body run by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) had been set up after the Sports Ministry de-recognized WFI, but it was dissolved following the UWW’s directive.
Wrestlers now await clearance from the Sports Authority of India (SAI) to participate in Zagreb. The competition is a crucial event for ranking points for the senior World Wrestling Championships later this year.
Despite submitting proposals to SAI, WFI officials report no response from the authorities, and given the approaching event dates, it seems unlikely the wrestlers will compete.
