India has reiterated its demand for accountability from the US regarding the attack on its consulate in San Francisco, emphasizing the need for justice against those responsible, reported timesofindia.indiatimes.com.
Jaishankar stressed that India expects those behind the attack to be held accountable.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Thursday addressed the 2023 attack on the Indian consulate in San Francisco, calling it a “very serious matter” and emphasizing India’s expectation of accountability from the US authorities.
“The arson attack on our consulate in San Francisco is a very, very serious matter, and it is something for which we expect accountability. We would like to see that people who did it are held responsible,” Jaishankar stated during a press conference in Washington, DC.
On March 19, 2023, the Consulate General of India in San Francisco was targeted in a series of violent incidents. Assailants attempted to set the building on fire by dousing it with inflammable substances in the early hours. Later the same day, another group engaged in criminal trespass, vandalizing public property and harassing consulate officials.
Videos circulating on social media showed suspected pro-Khalistani protestors gathered outside the consulate, chanting slogans and confronting diplomatic staff.
Three months later, in July 2023, Khalistani extremists made another attempt to set the consulate on fire, prompting a full-scale investigation.
The US condemned the attack as a “criminal offense,” and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) later assured India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) that it was “aggressively” investigating the incident. However, India continues to push for greater accountability and action against those responsible.
