Indian-origin Liberal Party leadership candidate makes strong stance on immigration policy
Indian-origin politician Ruby Dhalla, who has officially entered the race to become the leader of Canada’s Liberal Party and potentially the next prime minister, made a bold statement on illegal immigration on Tuesday. Dhalla, a former Member of Parliament, promised to deport illegal immigrants and crack down on human trafficking if elected, reported timesofindia.indiatimes.com.
Taking to the social media platform X, Dhalla reaffirmed her position on immigration, stating, “As Prime Minister, I will deport illegal immigrants and clamp down on human traffickers. That’s my promise to you.”
Dhalla, who represented the now-defunct riding of Brampton-Springdale from 2004 to 2011, is now vying to succeed Justin Trudeau as the Liberal Party leader. If successful, she could become the first woman of color to lead Canada as prime minister.
In a video posted on X, she expressed gratitude to her supporters and emphasized her historic candidacy, saying, “We are on the verge of creating history by electing the first woman of color as the leader of the Liberal Party and the next prime minister of Canada.”

Aiming for real change, Dhalla promises a centrist approach
Dhalla highlighted her vision for Canada in a campaign statement, pledging to restore the Liberal Party’s focus to its members and implement practical solutions for Canadians. “As leader, I will bring the party back into the hands of the members and return it to the centre with practical solutions to the challenges that Canadians are facing. If you want real change from a leader who is not connected to the current administration and has the ability to shake up the system, then join the Liberal Party and join me,” she stated.
Facing strong competition from prominent figures like former Bank of Canada and Bank of England governor Mark Carney and former minister of finance Chrystia Freeland, Dhalla’s campaign aims to attract a new demographic of voters.
Born in Winnipeg and later moving to Ontario, Dhalla built a career as a chiropractor before transitioning into politics under former Prime Minister Paul Martin. She describes herself as a “self-made businesswoman and entrepreneur” deeply committed to Canada and the Liberal Party.
The winner of the Liberal Party leadership race will be announced on March 9, determining the party’s next leader and potentially Canada’s next prime minister, depending on the outcome of the upcoming federal election.
