Microsoft-backed OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is reportedly planning to visit India next week, marking his first trip in two years as the company faces multiple legal battles in the country, reported timesofindia.indiatimes.com.
Altman is expected to arrive in New Delhi on February 5, with a possible meeting with government officials on the agenda. However, sources indicate that his schedule remains tentative and could change. OpenAI, the IT ministry, and the Prime Minister’s Office have not yet commented on the visit.
Legal troubles and market challenges surround OpenAI
India is OpenAI’s second-largest market by user base, following the US. Altman previously visited in 2023, meeting PM Narendra Modi to discuss AI’s role in India’s tech landscape. Since then, OpenAI has been embroiled in legal disputes, including a copyright lawsuit filed by news agency ANI and several digital media companies. OpenAI maintains that it only uses publicly available data under fair use principles and argues that Indian courts lack jurisdiction over the matter.
Meanwhile, the global AI market has seen turbulence following the rise of Chinese AI firm DeepSeek, whose AI Assistant recently surpassed ChatGPT as the top-rated free app on Apple’s App Store in the US.
