Indian-origin Dr Mumtaz Patel has been elected as the 123rd president of the Royal College of Physicians (RCP), marking a significant milestone in her distinguished medical career. She received 2,239 votes in a highly competitive election held between March 17 and April 14, 2025, securing a decisive margin of 682 votes over her closest contender, reported gujaratsamachar.com.
As the RCP president, Dr Patel will chair the RCP Council and sit on the Board of Trustees, overseeing the organization’s work and setting the direction for the future of medical practice in the UK. The president serves a four-year term and plays a crucial role in supporting members throughout their careers, aiming to deliver the highest standard of healthcare to patients.
With over two decades of leadership experience at RCP, Dr Patel brings passion, commitment, and vision to her new role as president.
Dr Patel, a consultant nephrologist based in Manchester, has been acting as the president since June 2024. She has held various senior roles at the RCP, including senior censor and vice president for education and training. Prior to these positions, she served as the global vice president and has made significant contributions to education and training within the medical community.
In addition to her work with the RCP, Dr Patel is a National Health Service England postgraduate associate dean for the north-west. She has also designed and delivered several educational and leadership courses both in the UK and internationally. Dr Patel is an experienced PACES examiner, contributing extensively to the assessment and professional development of future medical practitioners.
Her leadership and expertise are expected to further strengthen the RCP’s role in supporting healthcare professionals and improving patient care across the UK.
