Gurvinder Johal, 37, killed in broad daylight attack; suspect charged with murder
In a shocking daylight attack, 37-year-old Indian-origin man Gurvinder Johal was fatally stabbed inside a Lloyds Bank branch on St. Peter’s Street in Derby, England, on Tuesday. A 47-year-old man of Somali origin has been charged with murder and remains in custody
The suspect, identified as Haybe Cabdiraxmaan Nur, 47, from Normanton, Derby, has been charged with murder. He appeared via videolink at the Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court, speaking only to confirm his identity with the aid of a Somali interpreter. He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear next at Derby Crown Court.
Samantha Shallow, Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor for the East Midlands, confirmed the charge:
“After reviewing the evidence submitted by Derbyshire Constabulary, we have authorised a murder charge in connection with the death of 37-year-old Gurvinder Johal.”
Authorities also arrested a second man in his 30s in connection with the incident, but he has since been released without further action.
The case has sparked concern in the local community, particularly as it unfolded inside a public space during working hours. Investigations are ongoing to determine the motive behind the attack.
