MoU reinforces India-Bhutan clean energy ties and regional power integration goals
In a landmark move toward regional energy collaboration, Adani Group has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bhutan’s Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) to develop 5,000 MW of hydropower projects. The MoU was signed in Thimphu, with both governments expressing full support, reported ndtv.com.
The MoU was signed by DGPC’s Managing Director Dasho Chhewang Rinzin and Adani Green Hydro Ltd’s COO Naresh Telgu, in the presence of Bhutanese Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay, Energy Minister Lyonpo Gem Tshering, and other dignitaries. This partnership builds on their ongoing work in the 570/900 MW Wangchhu project, where DGPC holds a 51% stake and Adani holds 49%.
Chairman Gautam Adani, posting on X, said: “Honoured to deepen our partnership with Bhutan. We are committed to a greener and more prosperous future. Thank you @PMBhutan @tsheringtobgay for your trust and vision.”
The agreement includes the Wangchhu Hydropower Project and future pumped storage initiatives, boosting Bhutan’s clean energy roadmap.
The collaboration ensures reliable power offtake and seamless integration with India’s commercial power markets, further establishing Bhutan as a key player in regional energy trade. Both the Royal Government of Bhutan and the Government of India have backed the project, showcasing a unified vision for sustainable development.
The larger 5,000 MW initiative will include new hydropower and pumped storage projects, to be developed in phased implementation following detailed technical studies. This aligns with Bhutan’s Renewable Energy Roadmap, which aims to achieve 20,000 MW of generation capacity by 2040, while diversifying into solar and geothermal energy.
DGPC also initialled the Shareholders’ Agreement for the Wangchhu Project, signaling a major step forward in bilateral energy cooperation. DGPC, Bhutan’s premier hydropower agency, is crucial to the country’s clean energy goals, while Adani brings decades of infrastructure and renewable energy expertise to help Bhutan scale and access wider energy markets.
