15-year LNG supply agreement from Ruwais project to strengthen India-UAE energy ties
Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) has signed a 15-year Sales and Purchase Agreement with Indian Oil Corporation to supply one million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from its lower-carbon Ruwais LNG project. Deliveries will be made to multiple Indian ports, supporting the country’s rising energy needs and strengthening its energy security, reported ddnews.gov.in.
Rashid Khalfan Al Mazrouei, ADNOC’s Senior Vice President for Marketing, said the deal highlights the growing strategic energy partnership between the UAE and India. He added that the Ruwais LNG facility will supply lower-carbon natural gas to meet increasing global demand while also contributing to industrial growth and the energy transition.
By 2029, Indian Oil will be ADNOC’s biggest LNG customer, with a total offtake of 2.2 mtpa from both Das Island and Ruwais projects
Ruwais LNG: A clean-energy milestone
The Ruwais LNG project, currently under development in Al Ruwais Industrial City, will begin commercial operations in 2028. It will be the first LNG plant in West Asia powered entirely by clean energy, making it one of the lowest carbon-intensity facilities worldwide.
The site will feature two 4.8 mtpa liquefaction trains, with a combined capacity of 9.6 mtpa, and will integrate advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, to enhance safety, efficiency, and sustainability. The project broke ground in November 2024, and over 8 mtpa of its capacity has already been secured through long-term international agreements, underscoring strong demand for cleaner LNG.
The agreement also reflects the success of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) signed between India and the UAE in 2022, which has deepened bilateral trade and energy relations.
ADNOC has also signed additional LNG supply agreements with India, including a 10-year deal with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (0.5 mtpa) earlier this month and a 10-year deal with GAIL (0.52 mtpa) last year.
