Indian-origin parents ‘starved child to death’

  • Chilling details emerge in UK case

  • Manpreet Jatana and Jaskiret Singh Uppal charged with murder, manslaughter, and child neglect after three-year-old daughter dies from starvation

A London court heard that an Indian-origin couple deliberately starved their three-year-old daughter, Penelope Chandrie, to death over several months. Manpreet Jatana, 34, and Jaskiret Singh Uppal, 36, appeared at the Old Bailey to face charges of murder, manslaughter, causing or allowing the death of a child, and abandoning a child. Penelope’s body was discovered last year wrapped in a sheet at their west London home, reported hindustantimes.com.

Prosecutors reveal systematic neglect, with the child suffering fatal malnutrition and ketoacidosis

The prosecution stated that Penelope endured prolonged neglect and mistreatment, resulting in “fatal ketoacidosis,” a condition linked to extended periods without food. Police reported the home on Pennine Way was in poor condition, showing little evidence of proper care. The child’s diet reportedly consisted largely of yoghurt, lentils, and butter, as the family followed a vegetarian lifestyle. Emergency services found Penelope deceased on December 17, 2023.

Both parents were remanded in custody, with the next hearing set for December 16, when they will enter pleas of guilty or not guilty. The investigation, led by the Crown Prosecution Service, continues, with reporting restrictions in place until the next court session.
