Shenoy faces trial for a fatal 2005 car crash in Hicksville that killed a Long Island father
54-year-old Ganesh Shenoy was extradited from India to the United States after two decades of legal battles. Shenoy had fled to Mumbai in 2005 following a deadly car crash in Hicksville, New York, in which 44-year-old Philip Mastropolo lost his life. On September 26, Shenoy was arraigned before Judge Helene Gugerty on charges of Manslaughter in the Second Degree. He pleaded not guilty and was remanded, facing a potential sentence of five to 15 years if convicted, reported timesofindia.indiatimes.com.
After fleeing the US in 2005, Shenoy exhausted all legal avenues in India before being returned to face justice, illustrating that prolonged delays do not equate to denial of accountability
The crash occurred on April 11, 2005, when Shenoy allegedly ran a red light at Levittown Parkway and Old Country Road, driving at twice the speed limit and colliding with Mastropolo’s Cadillac. The impact caused Mastropolo’s car to skid 65 feet into a Freightliner truck. Mastropolo was pronounced dead at the scene, while Shenoy left the hospital after initially refusing treatment and providing false information to investigators. Two weeks later, he fled the US using his Indian passport, never returning until his extradition in 2025.
Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly credited the successful extradition to cooperation between the US Department of Justice, the US Marshals Service, and the US Embassy in India. “Justice delayed does not mean justice denied,” she said. Donnelly emphasized that Shenoy will now face consequences for his alleged actions, bringing long-awaited closure to Mastropolo’s family.
