Balraj Basra convicted of first-degree murder and arson in 2022 killing at University of British Columbia golf club
A Canadian court has sentenced 25-year-old Indian-origin Balraj Basra to 25 years in prison for his role in a 2022 homicide, media reports said. A jury at the Supreme Court of British Columbia found Basra guilty of first-degree murder and arson on Tuesday, according to City News, reported siasat.com.
Basra is the third individual convicted in the fatal shooting of 38-year-old Vishal Walia, a crime that shocked the University of British Columbia community.
The killing occurred on October 17, 2022, when Walia was shot at a golf club on UBC lands. Following the murder, the three convicts set a vehicle on fire
Police were called promptly, and officers from the Vancouver Police Department (VPD), along with the British Columbia Highway Patrol and Richmond Royal Canadian Mounted Police, apprehended the suspects shortly after they fled in another vehicle.
Earlier, Iqbal Kang (24) received a 17-year prison sentence with an additional five-year concurrent sentence for arson, while Deandre Baptiste (21) was sentenced to life imprisonment with no parole eligibility for 17 years, according to CBC, citing the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team.
