By following the ECI’s guidelines and submitting accurate documents, every eligible citizen—whether living in India or abroad—can enroll during the SIR and strengthen their participation in India’s democratic process
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has launched a fresh round of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) across 12 States and Union Territories, following its completion in Bihar. This major electoral update covers Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Goa, Puducherry, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Lakshadweep—together accounting for nearly 51 crore voters. With several state elections scheduled for 2026 and 2027, the SIR aims to ensure clean, accurate, and inclusive voter rolls.
For new voters, students, non-resident Indians (NRIs), and migrants, this period offers a key opportunity to register and secure their place on the electoral list.
Enrolment for New Voters, Students, and Migrants
Any Indian citizen who is 18 years old or will turn 18 soon can apply for voter enrolment by submitting Form 6. Applicants must also confirm they have not acquired citizenship of another country. During the SIR, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) assist with ground verification, collect new applications, and help remove duplicate or invalid entries from the rolls.
- The ECI has issued clear guidelines for filling Form 6. Applicants must address the form to the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) of the constituency where they ordinarily reside
- If the constituency name or number is unknown, the ERO will still accept the form. The form may be filled in English or the state’s official language
A recent passport-size photograph with a white background is mandatory, along with Aadhaar details or a declaration if Aadhaar is unavailable. Applicants should provide accurate personal information, including name, date of birth, gender, and complete residential address. Supporting documents such as age proof and address proof must be self-attested. Students may register using either their parent’s address or their place of usual residence, such as a hostel or mess. Those without documentation, including homeless citizens or vulnerable groups, will undergo field verification.
Enrolment for NRIs
NRIs must register using Form 6A. Only Indian citizens living abroad who have not acquired foreign citizenship are eligible. Applications must match the details in the applicant’s Indian passport. If applying by post, photocopies of passport pages and visa endorsements must be attested by an Indian Mission official. Those applying in person must bring their original passport for verification.
