As India continues to invest in domestic defense innovation, collaborations with experienced global players like Safran are expected to accelerate the development and deployment of next-generation combat systems
India has taken a significant step to enhance its defense manufacturing capabilities through a new collaboration with France. On Monday, India Optel Limited (IOL), a state-owned defense enterprise, signed a production transfer agreement with Safran Electronics & Defense, a leading French defense technology company. The pact focuses on two high-precision, combat-tested systems: the SIGMA 30N Digital Ring Laser Gyro Inertial Navigation System and the CM3-MR Direct Firing Sight.
The SIGMA 30N system is widely used across artillery guns, air defense platforms, missiles, and radar systems, providing precise navigation and targeting capabilities essential for modern combat operations. The CM3-MR Direct Firing Sight is designed for artillery and anti-drone systems, allowing enhanced accuracy in fast-moving and complex battlefield scenarios.
The agreement was signed by Tushar Tripathi, Chairman and Managing Director of IOL, and Alexandre Ziegler, Head of the Defence Global Business Unit at Safran, in the presence of Sanjeev Kumar, Secretary of Defence Production.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the pact marks a critical step toward local production of these strategic systems in India, reducing reliance on imports and strengthening the domestic defense industry
This collaboration builds on a framework initially established between the two organizations in January 2024 and reflects India’s broader efforts to foster self-reliance in defense technology. Notably, the announcement comes just a month after Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) signed a Joint Venture Cooperation Agreement with Safran to manufacture Highly Agile Modular Munition Extended Range (HAMMER) smart precision-guided air-to-ground weapons in India.
The move underscores India’s commitment to advancing its indigenous defense manufacturing ecosystem while deepening strategic partnerships with global defense leaders. By producing advanced navigation and targeting systems locally, India aims to enhance operational readiness, strengthen defense supply chains, and create high-tech manufacturing opportunities within the country.
