India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has issued an urgent advisory asking all Indian nationals currently in Iran to leave the country at the earliest. The advisory, released on 3 February 2026, is the second warning issued within two days and comes amid growing security concerns across several Iranian provinces.

In its statement, the MEA strongly advised Indians against undertaking any non-essential travel to Iran. It said the situation on the ground has worsened rapidly following clashes between Iranian security forces and opposition groups in different parts of the country. The government has described the security environment as unpredictable, with the potential for further escalation.

  • Around 10,000 Indian citizens are estimated to be living in Iran. This includes a large number of Indian students enrolled in medical universities, as well as Shia pilgrims who travel to the country for religious reasons

  • Many of them are concentrated in major cities, but unrest has been reported in multiple regions, raising concerns about safety and mobility

To assist those affected, the Indian Embassy in Tehran has issued new emergency helpline numbers and asked all Indian nationals to remain in close contact with embassy officials. Citizens have been urged to register their details with the embassy, follow local advisories, and avoid areas witnessing protests or violence.

The MEA has assured that it is closely monitoring developments and coordinating with Iranian authorities to ensure the safety of Indian nationals. It has also advised those who are able to leave Iran to do so using available commercial travel options, while they are still operational.

Family members in India have been encouraged to stay updated through official MEA channels and avoid relying on unverified information circulating on social media.
