The debate has since widened into a broader discussion about immigration, identity and tolerance in America. While some backed Turcios’ concerns about demographic change, many others said diversity remains one of the country’s greatest strengths.

A political row has broken out in Texas after conservative activist Carlos Turcios criticised a towering statue of Lord Hanuman in Sugar Land, sparking sharp reactions online.

The 90-foot statue stands at the Shri Ashtalakshmi Temple in Sugar Land, a suburb of Houston. It is one of the tallest statues in the United States and has become a landmark for the local Hindu community.

Turcios posted a video of the statue on X, formerly known as Twitter, questioning why such a large monument had been built in Texas. In his post, he compared Sugar Land to cities abroad and claimed that “third World Aliens are slowly taking over Texas and America”.

He also asked why the statue was among the largest in the country and urged followers to “stop the invasion”.

His remarks quickly drew criticism from social media users, including members of the Indian-American community. Many described the comments as offensive and divisive, arguing that Hindu temples and cultural symbols are part of America’s long-standing tradition of religious freedom. Others pointed out that Indian-Americans have contributed significantly to business, technology and public life in Texas and across the United States.

Supporters of the temple said the statue represents faith, heritage and community pride rather than politics. They stressed that the United States was built by immigrants from many backgrounds and that freedom of religion is protected by law.
