Companies are advised to prepare documents carefully and book biometric appointments early, particularly during the busy April to July travel period
The United Kingdom has officially launched a fully digital border system, replacing the familiar green-and-gold visa sticker with a mandatory electronic visa (eVisa) for Indian nationals. The change marks a major step in modernising the UK’s immigration process.
Under the new system, Indian applicants must still visit a VFS Global centre to provide biometric data. However, passports are returned on the same day. Once the visa is approved, the permission to travel is issued digitally and linked directly to the traveller’s passport number. Airlines can then verify visa status in real time before departure.
British authorities say this shift is designed to improve efficiency and strengthen border security. By allowing airlines to confirm travel clearance before boarding, the Home Office expects fewer last-minute entry refusals at major airports such as Heathrow Airport and Gatwick Airport. Officials also believe the digital system will help reduce document fraud
The eVisa aligns with the UK’s wider digital entry framework, including the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme for visa-exempt travellers. Together, these measures create a streamlined digital border similar to systems used in other countries.
For Indian businesses, the biggest benefit is quicker passport access. In 2025, many business travellers reported losing valuable working days because their passports remained at visa centres during processing. The new system allows executives to retain their passports, making it easier to manage multi-country trips while awaiting UK approval.
However, experts stress that eligibility rules remain unchanged. Applicants must still provide financial records, travel history and proof of intent to return to India. Those without prior travel to the UK, US or Schengen countries may face additional checks.
