Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured citizens living overseas that the government will extend full support to Indian nationals affected by escalating tensions in West Asia.

Speaking at a public event in Kochi in the southern Indian state of Kerala, Modi said New Delhi is closely monitoring developments in the Middle East and is coordinating with diplomatic missions to assist Indian citizens across the region.

The Prime Minister emphasized that India’s embassies and consulates remain fully engaged in supporting expatriates, particularly in Gulf countries where millions of Indians live and work.

“Whenever our countrymen face difficulties abroad, we stand with them,” Modi said, noting that Indian missions have activated round-the-clock helplines to respond to concerns from citizens and their families.

The remarks come as regional security concerns have intensified amid the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran. Authorities have been closely watching developments that could affect travel, safety and economic activity across the Gulf.

Recent incidents have also highlighted potential risks for residents and travellers in the region. Earlier this week, two drones reportedly fell near Dubai International Airport, injuring four people, including an Indian national.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs has been maintaining active diplomatic communication with governments across the region. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently held discussions with his Iranian counterpart to assess the situation and address concerns affecting Indian nationals.

Modi also expressed appreciation to Gulf countries for the support they have extended to the Indian expatriate community during the period of heightened tensions

Millions of Indians reside across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, contributing significantly to sectors such as construction, healthcare, technology and services. Their remittances represent a major economic link between India and the region.

Given the large diaspora presence, the Indian government has traditionally prioritized rapid response mechanisms during crises affecting overseas citizens. These include emergency evacuation operations, diplomatic engagement with host governments and assistance through embassies and community organizations.

Officials say contingency plans remain in place should the situation escalate further. Indian diplomatic missions across West Asia are continuing to monitor developments and provide updates to citizens regarding safety advisories and travel conditions.

The government has urged Indian nationals living abroad to stay in contact with local embassies and register with mission databases where possible to facilitate assistance if required.
