Indian police in Punjab have arrested a recruitment agent accused of operating an overseas employment scam targeting workers seeking jobs in Gulf countries, with authorities confirming the arrest within the past 24 hours.

According to investigators, the accused allegedly collected large payments from workers after promising high-paying construction and hospitality jobs in the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Police claim many victims later discovered that visa documents, employment contracts, and travel assurances provided by the agent were fraudulent.

“The investigation suggests deliberate deception involving forged immigration and employment paperwork,” a Punjab police official stated during a briefing.

Several affected workers reported borrowing money or mortgaging family assets to finance migration expenses connected to the alleged scheme. Some victims said they arrived abroad only to discover that promised jobs did not exist or differed drastically from original agreements.

Authorities reportedly seized passports, forged visa templates, financial ledgers, and digital communication records during raids conducted at properties linked to the accused

The case has renewed concern regarding illegal recruitment networks operating across northern India, particularly in regions where overseas employment migration remains economically significant.

Labour migration experts warned that fake overseas job schemes continue exploiting demand for Gulf employment opportunities among lower-income workers. “Fraudsters take advantage of information gaps and economic desperation,” said a migration policy researcher.

The Ministry of External Affairs has repeatedly urged Indian citizens to verify overseas recruitment agencies through official government systems before making payments.
