India Becomes Australia’s Largest Source of Migrants in Historic Demographic Shift

New migration data highlights the growing economic and social influence of the Indian-Australian community amid ongoing debates over immigration and infrastructure

India has become Australia’s largest source of migrants for the first time on record, overtaking England in what experts describe as a significant demographic milestone for the country.

Although the difference between the two groups is relatively small, the change reflects a broader long-term trend rather than a temporary fluctuation. The shift marks a new chapter in Australia’s migration story and underscores the increasingly close relationship between Australia and India.

Recent census and economic data indicate that Indian-born migrants are among the country’s most highly educated and economically active communities. According to the 2021 Census, around 68 per cent of Indian-born residents hold a bachelor’s degree or higher, compared with 36 per cent of Australian-born Australians. Nearly one-third have postgraduate qualifications.

The community also ranks strongly in income levels. Indian-born migrants have the highest proportion of top income earners among major population groups, while recording one of the lowest shares in lower-income brackets

As of 2020, Indian-born taxpayers contributed an estimated A$5.8 billion in annual income tax revenue. With the Indian-born population having expanded by almost 300,000 people since then, the overall contribution is likely to have increased significantly.

The milestone comes amid continuing debate over immigration, housing affordability and infrastructure pressures. While concerns over housing shortages and strained public services remain prominent, analysts argue these challenges are linked primarily to long-term planning and investment decisions rather than the nationality of incoming migrants.

The growth of the Indian-Australian community also aligns with Australia’s broader strategic objectives. Canberra has strengthened trade, defence and diplomatic ties with New Delhi in recent years through initiatives including the Quad partnership and bilateral trade agreements.

Research suggests that rising Indian migration has contributed to stronger export links and business creation, reinforcing the economic benefits of closer ties between the two nations.

As Australia navigates population growth and infrastructure challenges, the emergence of India as its leading source of migrants is likely to remain a key feature of the nation’s economic and social landscape.
