India and the United Kingdom have held discussions aimed at strengthening cooperation in innovation, technology, research, startups and emerging sectors, as both countries continue to deepen their economic partnership.

India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and the UK’s Secretary of State for Business and Trade, Peter Kyle, held a virtual bilateral meeting on June 15 to explore new opportunities for collaboration in key growth areas.

In a social media post following the meeting, Goyal said the talks were productive and focused on expanding India-UK cooperation in innovation, technology, research, startups and emerging technologies.

  • The discussions come at an important stage in bilateral relations following the signing of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between the two countries on July 24, 2025

  • The agreement is expected to boost trade, investment and economic cooperation across a range of sectors

However, some issues remain to be resolved before the agreement can be fully implemented. Among the concerns are British safeguard measures affecting steel imports, which have emerged as a point of discussion between the two sides.

The latest virtual meeting follows earlier talks between Goyal and Kyle held in New Delhi on June 2, where trade-related matters and implementation challenges linked to the trade pact were also discussed.

Officials view closer cooperation in technology and innovation as a key pillar of the broader India-UK partnership, particularly as both countries seek to expand collaboration in advanced industries and emerging technologies.

Goyal is expected to visit London later this month, with further discussions likely to focus on strengthening trade ties and advancing the implementation of the landmark trade agreement.
