Telangana NRIs in Dubai Face Uncertainty Over Electoral Roll Verification

Confusion over voter registration rules and document requirements leaves many overseas electors seeking clarification

Hundreds of Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) from Telangana living in Dubai have expressed concern over the ongoing electoral roll verification process, with many fearing that their names could be removed from voter lists because of confusion surrounding registration requirements.

The concerns have emerged after overseas voters reported difficulties in completing the verification process, particularly regarding the submission of Form 6A and supporting documents through the Election Commission’s online portal. Several applicants said they were unable to upload visa-related documents or complete their applications due to technical and procedural issues, creating uncertainty about their voter status.

  • Community representatives said many eligible overseas electors are anxious because they have not received clear guidance on whether existing registrations remain valid or whether fresh verification is required

  • They have urged the authorities to issue detailed instructions to prevent eligible voters from being left out of the electoral rolls

Under the Election Commission of India’s rules, Indian citizens residing abroad who have not acquired foreign citizenship can register as overseas electors by submitting Form 6A for the constituency corresponding to the address mentioned in their Indian passport. Applicants must provide the required supporting documents, and any change in overseas residential address should also be updated with the Electoral Registration Officer.

Members of Telangana’s Gulf community have appealed to the Chief Electoral Officer and the Election Commission to simplify the verification process, resolve technical glitches on the voter registration portal and provide dedicated assistance for overseas applicants. They have also requested greater coordination with Indian missions in the Gulf to help NRIs complete the registration process without unnecessary delays.

The issue has drawn attention because the Gulf region, particularly the United Arab Emirates, is home to a large number of Telangana migrants who remain eligible to vote in India as overseas electors, provided they fulfil the prescribed conditions under the law.
