Officer accused of conspiring with gangsters to extort US-based Indian family after high-profile murder investigation

A Punjab Police inspector has been arrested in connection with an alleged international extortion racket targeting a United States-based Indian family, in a case that has drawn attention from both Indian and American law enforcement agencies.
Inspector Gurinderjit Singh Nagra, a former Station House Officer (SHO) of Tanda police station in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur district, was taken into custody after investigators linked him to an alleged attempt to extort $400,000 (around ₹3.8 crore) from an NRI family residing in the US. The case is also the subject of a US federal investigation.
According to investigators, the alleged extortion was connected to the murder of an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) worker. US authorities have accused Nagra of working with members of an organised criminal network that allegedly threatened the victim’s family to extract money. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is reported to have investigated the cross-border conspiracy, leading to charges against those allegedly involved.

Following the emergence of the allegations, Punjab Police relieved Nagra of his duties and transferred him to the police lines before formally arresting him

The arrest marks a significant development in a case that highlights increasing cooperation between Indian and US law enforcement agencies in tackling organised crime with international links. Officials have not disclosed whether extradition proceedings will be pursued, and no court has yet ruled on the allegations. As with all criminal proceedings, the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
