New applications and sponsor invitations suspended indefinitely as Ottawa focuses on clearing existing immigration backlogs
Canada has suspended the intake of new applications under its Parents and Grandparents Programme (PGP), leaving many immigrant families, including a large number from the Indian diaspora, uncertain about when they will be able to reunite with their loved ones.
The Canadian government announced that, effective 15 July, it will no longer accept new interest-to-sponsor forms or issue fresh invitations under the PGP until further notice. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) said the move is intended to maintain a sustainable immigration system while reducing application backlogs and improving processing times.

Immigration experts say the indefinite suspension could delay plans for thousands of families waiting to bring elderly parents and grandparents to live with them permanently.
For those affected, the Canadian government has pointed to the Super Visa as an alternative. The visa allows eligible parents and grandparents to visit Canada for extended periods, although it does not provide permanent resident status or the long-term benefits associated with immigration.
IRCC said family reunification remains a key priority despite the temporary suspension and indicated that it would announce future changes to the programme when conditions allow. Until then, prospective sponsors will be unable to submit new applications or enter the selection process, leaving many families facing an uncertain wait for permanent reunification.
