Many NRIs stuck due to non-recognition of vaccines given in India

Indians have to undergo a 21-day “washout” period in a country other than India and one that is not in group A of Hong Kong’s list, before they board their flight to Hong Kong, despite being vaccinated

Non-recognition of Indian version of Astrazeneca Covid-19 vaccine — Covishield — by some countries is causing problem for travellers from India particularly the NRIs who have taken the vaccine in India.

One recent example is Hong Kong which has come out with a rule that an Indian who is a Hong Kong resident, and has completed Covishield dose in India, is not eligible to enter directly in Japan.

At the moment, Hong Kong is recognizing vaccination records from countries specified in the World Health Organisation’s Stringent Regulatory Authority (SRA) list that consists 36 countries, and India is not its part.

Indians have to go to another country and stay there for three weeks. Then they are eligible to travel to Hong Kong, where again they have to do a 21-day quarantine in a hotel

That means residents of Hong Kong who are Indians have to undergo a 21-day “washout” period in a country other than India and one that is not in group A of Hong Kong’s list, before they board their flight to Hong Kong, despite being vaccinated.

This is an expensive affair for a traveller from India to Hong Kong. Indians have to go to another country and stay there for three weeks. Then they are eligible to travel to Hong Kong, where again they have to do a 21-day quarantine in a hotel.

Thus, those who are fully vaccinated will have to undergo mandatory quarantine of 21 days in Hong Kong and must show proof of their booking at one of the pre-designated quarantine hotels in Hong Kong for not less than 21 days before boarding the flight.
