Australia tightens student visa checks as refusals Hit 10-year high
Australia has recorded its highest student visa refusal rate in a decade, with applicants from India and Nepal facing particularly high rejection rates during the 2025–26 financial year.
The overall refusal rate reached 24.2% in June 2026, according to Department of Home Affairs data reported by ABC News. The figure marks a sharp increase from 7.9% in June 2016, highlighting the growing scrutiny of applications from international students.

Applicants from Nepal experienced a refusal rate of more than 51%, while over 40% of applications from India were rejected during 2025–26

By comparison, the refusal rate for Chinese applicants stood at 5.8%
The figures do not mean that nationality alone determines the outcome. Australian authorities assess applications individually against migration requirements, including whether applicants meet the Genuine Student criteria.
Under these requirements, students must demonstrate that their proposed course aligns with their educational background, employment history, personal circumstances and future career plans.
Authorities may also consider an applicant’s circumstances in their home country, their likely situation in Australia, the value of the proposed course and previous immigration history.
Applicants are therefore expected to provide a clear explanation of why they have chosen a particular course and how it supports their long-term plans. General claims about Australia’s education system may not be sufficient without supporting evidence.
What students should do after a refusal
Students whose visa applications are rejected should carefully review their refusal letters to understand the reasons for the decision and whether they have review rights.
Some applicants may be eligible to appeal through the Administrative Review Tribunal (ART), while others may need to submit a fresh application after addressing the concerns raised by authorities.
Since 1 June 2026, most student visa refusal reviews at the ART are generally being decided without an oral hearing, placing greater importance on written submissions and supporting evidence.
Applicants are advised to address the reasons for refusal before reapplying and seek qualified immigration advice where necessary.
